Position Summary

The Addictions Counsellor supports clients at the Battlefords Treatment Centre to make positive life changes through culturally grounded, client-centered care. This role helps individuals struggling with substance use disorders develop coping skills, improve decision-making, and work toward recovery and personal growth.

Key Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Develop individualized treatment plans and monitor client progress.
  • Facilitate and motivate active participation in workshops, ceremonies, and group sessions.
  • Manage group dynamics, address conflicts, and support clients in crisis.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client documentation.
  • Adhere to Poundmaker’s Lodge policies, professional ethics, and CARF standards.

Operational Duties

  • Dispense and document prescribed medications as directed.
  • Record daily progress notes, incident reports, and discharge summaries.
  • Conduct client orientation, room checks, and ensure a safe and respectful environment.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions.
  • Participate in the quality improvement and accreditation process.

Client Support

  • Provide one-to-one counselling and culturally informed guidance.
  • Encourage holistic wellness—spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well-being.
  • Deliver feedback, assignments, and support to help clients achieve treatment goals.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and demonstrate empathy and respect.
  • Motivate clients to engage fully in their recovery journey.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Addictions Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field.
  • Certification or registration with a recognized professional body (preferred).
  • Minimum two years of counselling or addictions treatment experience.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and healing practices.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and crisis intervention skills.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector search.

Work Conditions

  • Full-time position, shift or weekend work may be required.
  • Based at the Battlefords Treatment Centre.
  • Active participation in cultural and experiential treatment practices expected.
