Calgary’s science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada’s largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven’s Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada’s first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.

Position Overview

Spark is currently recruiting for a full time permanent Director of Marketing and Business development.  The Director of Marketing and Business Development will report directly to the VP, Brand, Marketing and Communications. The Director of Marketing and Business Development is a seasoned people leader, a strategic thinker, a skillful marketing planner, and is familiar with all areas of marketing campaigns, working with agencies and the RFP process, campaign measurement, budgeting, data interpretation, experiential marketing, conversion and ROI. This person is an expert at directing the development and execution of external marketing communications initiatives including product launches, sales collateral, fundraising, campaigns, social site presence, company website, public/government relations, internal communication, regulatory communications, community outreach and events. This position models and thrives in a high performance culture and can support multiple projects seamlessly.

As part of the Leadership Team, this role will support Spark’s Mission, Vision and Purpose in all aspects of Marketing and Business Development. The primary role is to plan, oversee, build strategies, and execute on market research, and lead the team through brand delivery and consistency across all business units for all product lines. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, with a positive attitude, ability to inspire others, superior organizational skills, a passion for collaboration, leads calmly and professionally though challenging situations, and a flair for science. Additionally, this role is key in leveraging various communication channels to reach target audiences, drive program outcomes, and contribute to Spark’s strategy and overall financial and operational success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead an amazing team of marketing, communications and brand professionals as well as lead memberships, retail and call centre teams.
  • Develop and implement annual strategic marketing communication plans aligned with the goals of the science centre to be one of the top 10 most-worth-visiting science centres in the world.
  • Create and implement marketing communication plans for new products, launches, campaigns, fundraising, events, business unit needs, and promotions with measurable outcomes and KPIs.
  • Conduct market research to identify trends and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure cohesive messaging and branding.
  • Monitor and analyze the effectiveness of marketing initiatives and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Respond to communication-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Work with Marketing Manager and Store Retail and Membership Manager to maintain related budgets.
  • Ensure team activities are aligned with business and strategic goals of Spark as a whole.
  • Model high performance, flexibility and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment.

Qualifications & Knowledge

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in a similar role.
  • At least 8 years people leadership.
  • Proven track record in strategic planning, campaign planning and results driven campaigns.
  • Excellent communicator with proven effectiveness and expertise in communicating complex materials across all platforms and with personality and heart.
  • A degree in marketing and/or communications or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing, SEO, SEM, and social media.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute successful marketing strategies.
  • Experience with marketing analytics and tools. Specifically Meltwater, Sprout, Google Analytics/reporting.
  • A background in retail, non for profits and attractions/museums considered an asset.
  • Must be able to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • This is an onsite role located at TELUS Spark.
