We regulate investor-owned natural gas, electric and water utilities and certain municipally owned electric utilities to ensure that customers receive safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates. The AUC ensures that electric facilities are built, operated and decommissioned in an efficient and environmentally responsible way. The AUC also provides regulatory oversight of issues related to the development and operation of the wholesale electricity market in Alberta as well as the retail gas and electricity markets in the province.

The successful candidate is a collaborative and self-directed professional who can effectively manage multiple priorities while applying sound scientific judgment and a strong understanding of environmental policies and legislation.
Key Responsibilities:
• Review and evaluate environmental evaluations, environmental protection plans, environmental impact assessments and all other documents related to environmental components (e.g. air, soils, vegetation, water, and wildlife) potentially affected by proposed utility infrastructure projects.
• Independently recognize the deficiencies in facility applications and prepare correspondence in accordance with AUC requirements to improve the AUC’s understanding of the application.
• Provide technical advice and recommendations to the Commission using fundamental scientific concepts and principles of environmental science.
• Write and review briefing notes and environmental-related sections of draft decision reports within tight deadlines.
• Participate in the development of rules and guidelines with respect to environmental matters within the AUC’s jurisdiction.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor of science degree in a related science, environmental engineering or environmental studies, or technical diploma in a directly related field.

• Strong technical writing ability that conveys intended messages to target audiences with clarity and precision.
• A sound understanding of relevant provincial and federal environmental policies, legislation, and standards.
