Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Janitor/Donations Receiver to join our team at Inn from the Cold. The Janitor at Inn from the Cold (The Inn) is responsible for maintaining clean facilities, performing tasks like floor cleaning, wall washing, and rubbish removal, while adhering to safety protocols, and assisting with basic maintenance and non-cash donation sorting.

 

What You'll Do 

Janitorial Responsibilities

  • Hand dust and clean: all office furnishings, file cabinets, fixtures, paneling, window sills and all other flat surfaces weekly
  • Wipe clean and buff all metal hardware fixtures
  • Update inventory list every Thursday
    • Damp cloth dust: all ceiling air conditioning diffusers, partition grilles, register and other ventilating louvers monthly
    • Move heavy furniture, equipment, supplies (either manually or by using a hand cart or with other help if needed) and clean under these areas as required
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties weekly.
  • Washroom cleaning checklist must be signed and dated daily.
  • Vacuuming Mopping as required.
  • Take direction from senior staff and management

 

Donations Receiving and Inventory Management Responsibilities

  • Receive gift-in-kind donations in the main receiving area
  • Be able to pre-sort donations into categories (clothing, books, shoes, house wares, small appliances, toys, etc.) and store in designated areas.
  • Pre-sort and assess quality and dispose of used, inappropriate, or excess goods; in some cases, arrange donations and delivery to other agencies.
  • Maintain tidiness and organization of the upper receiving area and basement storage area.
  • Assist and perform donation and other inventory management, including shortages.

 

Ongoing Duties

  • Ensure safe methods of lifting, and where necessary, assisted lift for heavier items.
  • Follow all safety, operational, security and adherence to The Inn’s policies and procedures.
  • Follow all safe handling, WHIMIS Standards of cleaning chemicals
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and check electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created daily.
  • Notify Facilities Manager concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Assist with offloading or loading donations and food supplies.
  • Report all Occupational Health and Safety concerns to the Facilities Manager.
  • Participate in organizational activities including employee engagement activities, team meetings, town halls and team building.
  • Participate in development opportunities.
  • Be available for flexible shifts, including weekends, holidays, and extra hours as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Customer service experience – an asset.
  • 1 year of custodial/janitorial.
  • Donations receiving experience – an asset.
  • Technical inclination – an asset.
  • Working in LEAN environment, and/or vulnerable sectors – an asset.
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability and desire to learn and understand customer needs and company’s goals.
  • Exhibit initiative, responsibility, and flexibility
  • Good communication.
  • Problem solving skills and able to create alternative solutions to problems.
